How it started
The first language exchange happened in November 2023, at Mon: Come y Sueña. Jimmy had the idea, and Iria offered the place.
Plenty of people in the area come from abroad. Some, like Jimmy, want to practice Spanish and Galician. Others, like Kasia, want to practice English. Many people from Monforte want English as well, and they help everyone else with Spanish and Galician.
More and more people from other countries live in Monforte, speaking other languages. The exchange is a place for them and people from here to get to know each other. Linguas Tecidas is Galician for “woven languages.”
Common Questions
Do I need to be fluent?
No. Beginners and native speakers both come, and the group includes a few language teachers and plenty of bilingual people. If you don't understand something, say so and someone will help.
Is it free?
Yes, and you don't have to buy anything. If we meet at a bar or café, getting a drink is a nice way to thank the venue.
What languages are spoken?
Mostly English, Spanish and Galician. When there are enough of us, we split into tables by language; when there aren't, we share one table and divide the time. If you want to practice another language, ask in the WhatsApp group: sometimes someone speaks it.
Can I come alone?
Yes. Most people do. Say hello when you arrive and we'll find you a seat in a conversation.
What actually happens there?
We talk. There's no lesson and no agenda. Sometimes we suggest topics in the reminder the day before, but the conversation goes wherever it goes. Lately there are about 10 to 15 of us, and some weeks more than 20. Some people have become regulars, and some have become friends.
How long does it last?
About two hours. Each session's time is in the list of sessions.
